Matt Laubhan - WTVA Tupelo

Matt Laubhan is an Emmy winning Chief Meteorologist for WTVA Tupelo and is also Mississippi’s first Certified Broadcast Meteorologist.

When asked what all the job entails, Laubhan replied with, “Everything. Social Media is definitely a 24/7 job that comes with being on television. I do a lot of everything being a meteorologist.”

Laubhan described himself as being passionate about severe weather preparedness. Originally from a small town in Kansas, Laubhan has always had an interest in meteorology due to the fact that he was afraid of tornadoes. He decided to attempt and face his fear and he followed that dream causing him to win multiple Emmy awards.

Prior to joining WTVA, Laubhan spent seven years as Chief Meteorologist for KLBK-TV in West Texas, and before that as Morning Meteorologist for KAMC-TV in Lubbock, Texas. Laubhan describes his weather station as a controlled environment with tons of action.

“The station can sometimes be hectic.” Laubhan said. “Regardless of how crazy everything is, there is always good energy in the building.”

Many days at the station for Laubhan begin around 3 p.m. and typically end anywhere between 11p.m. and 2 a.m.

“The days can differ depending of the severity of the weather going on around us.” Laubhan said. “But it’s always guaranteed that the weather is gonna be unpredictable.”
